J.J. Johnson was one of the great pioneers of modern jazz - the first to take the trombone into the intricate whirlpool of bebop and return in one piece! Making his start in the influential Big Bands of the 40s, including Benny Carter’s Orchestra and the Count Basie Big Band, he moved on to shape the sound of bebop with his smooth tone, groovy rhythmic concept and sophisticated language which took the trombone to new heights – inspiring a new generation of trombonists along the way. His music encompassed fiery bebop, soulful ballads and hard bop grooves, including his landmark compositions Lament, Wee-Dot, Boneology and Turnpike. Join us as we celebrate J.J.
