Join us for a moderate-paced riverside walk across seven of London’s iconic bridges. This is a lovely, social walk with plenty of pauses to take in the city views and the river.
We’ll begin near Surrey Quays, then make our way to Tower Bridge before starting our zig-zag route further west, crossing several bridges and finishing at Golden Jubilee Bridge.
The full linear route is 13 km (8 miles) and takes roughly 4 - 5 hours at a moderate pace, including breaks for photos, views, and rest.
We finish at Golden Jubilee Bridge, right beside the Southbank Food Market, cafés, and riverside shops where we will pause for a longer break to eat and unwind before heading inside the Southbank Centre for music.
After the walk, you’re more than welcome to join the Southbank Simmer Down reggae session - a free indoor event celebrating unity, rhythm, and good vibes. As the organisers say: “Simmer down and feel the irie spirit of unity.” A lovely way to end the day together.
Terrain: Riverside urban walking alongside the Thames, crossing seven bridges. Each bridge includes a set of steps, and there are several flights of steps throughout the route which can feel tiring over time, please come prepared for this.
The route is mostly paved, though there are some uneven sections. Surfaces may be muddy and slippery in wet weather.
** This walk involves heights when crossing bridges.
What to bring: Water, lunch/snacks, weather-appropriate clothing, and supportive footwear suitable for several hours of walking. You might also like to bring a change of comfy shoes if you’re planning to dance at Simmer Down afterwards. Layers are helpful, as the riverside can feel cooler. Feel free to bring anything that supports your comfort during breaks.
Lunch stop: We will take a short break partway through the walk. You’re welcome to bring your own food or purchase something along the route.
We’ll finish at the Southbank Food Market, where there are plenty of food stalls, cafés and indoor seating options. You’re welcome to bring your own food if you prefer too.
Facilities: Toilets are available near the start and end of the route, with additional facilities at various points along the Southbank. Facilities are limited along the middle section of the walk, so please plan accordingly.
Transport: This is NOT a circular walk. Public transport is recommended where possible. Free parking is available near Tesco at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre (up to 3 hours). Paid parking is available around the Southbank area, though spaces can be limited.
This event will be led by a BGH trained walk leader. Please note that the leader does not hold a Mountain Leader qualification, and participation is therefore at your own discretion and risk.
