Join us for an exciting workshop designed just for boys aged 8-17! Whether they’re brand new to coding or eager to level up their skills.
About this Event

Workshop Overview

Our March workshop takes robotics learning to the next level by splitting learners into two dynamic tracks: Applied Sensing and Capstone Project Planning.

Beginners dive deeper into distance sensors, programming obstacle-avoidance robots that can navigate mazes, steer around barriers, and adjust their paths in real time. Through hands-on experimentation and problem-solving, they refine their code using trial and error, building a powerful understanding of how sensing, logic, and movement work together to create intelligent machines.

Advanced learners shift into innovation mode. They explore real-world robotics applications in healthcare, logistics, environmental monitoring, and beyond. Drawing inspiration from industry examples, they design detailed blueprints for their own capstone builds, defining goals, selecting components, mapping logic flows, and laying the groundwork for impactful final projects.

This is a free workshop, and an exciting opportunity for students to explore robotics, critical thinking, and innovation in a supportive, high-energy environment.

Beginner Track - Obstacle Detection with the Distance Sensor

Beginners program robots to detect and avoid obstacles, applying loops and conditionals to create responsive, intelligent movement.

Materials Required

Black Boys Code will provide all required materials. Just come with curiosity and ready to build!

  • Laptop or tablet with SPIKE app installed
  • LEGO SPIKE Prime kit with hub, motors, and distance sensor
  • Objects for obstacle courses

Beginner Track Learning Outcomes

Understand Obstacle Detection: Learners will describe how distance sensors detect objects and measure space.

Apply If Statements: Students will trigger actions automatically when obstacles are detected.

Use Loops for Continuous Control: Learners will program robots to constantly monitor their surroundings while moving.

Test Obstacle Courses: Students will evaluate, debug, and optimize their programs for better performance.

Relate to Vehicle Safety: Learners will connect their builds to real-world collision-avoidance systems used in modern vehicles.

Advanced Track - Capstone Planning & Research

Advanced learners research real-world robotics systems and develop structured blueprints for their group capstone projects.

Materials Required

Black Boys Code will provide all required materials. Just come with curiosity and ready to innovate!

  • Internet access for guided research
  • Project planning worksheets
  • Sketching materials

Advanced Track Learning Outcomes

Research Real-World Robots: Students will explore autonomous vehicles, rescue robots, warehouse automation systems, and more.

Brainstorm Capstone Ideas: Learners will generate, evaluate, and refine creative robotics concepts.

Create Blueprints: Students will sketch designs and outline sensors, motors, and logic flows required for their builds.

Assign Team Roles: Learners will organize responsibilities to ensure effective collaboration.

Present Concepts for Feedback: Students will share early-stage plans with peers and instructors to strengthen their final projects.
