About this Event
Do you like biking in DC? Do you want to find an active and environmentally friendly way to get to school? Then join our info session on starting a bike bus in your community!
A bike bus is an alternative to traditional school drop off and pick up. Groups of children and parents ride to school along a predetermined route, picking other students up along the way. Bike buses are great for any age, from elementary to high school! Check out Coach Sam Balto's (the bike bus guy on Tik Tok) videos!
Schools in DC, like Mundo Verde Calle Ocho and Dunbar High School, joined the movement and do regular bike buses. Thanks to the hard work of a few families and people lilke Coach Alex Clark, Dunbar's P.E. teacher and leader of Prime Ability, these bike buses regularly have 50-100 students participate
Bike buses start small, but grow with support from schools and local community organizations. WABA wants to support your community in getting one started.
At this info session we will cover topics like: determining a route, safety precautions, DC road laws. Parents, caretakers, and school staff are encouraged to join!
The following Saturday, WABA will host a class that teaches partcipants the on-bike skills needed to bike to school safely. We will then go on a group ride to practice a mock bike bus. Families and school staff are encouraged to join.
