There have been thousands of versions of A Christmas Carol filmed, in one fashion or another. And the story being as old as it is, most of them try some kind of twist. Change the setting, change the time period, change the stakes. The Muppet Christmas Carol is a remarkably faithful adaptation of the classic story, despite all the puppets — and you could argue it’s the best film version available for modern audiences (note that the George C. Scott one was actually a TV special). For one, the casting is impeccable. Pure-hearted Kermit plays the put-upon Bob Crachit. Curmudgeons Statler and Waldorf play the Marley ghosts, Scrooge’s former business partners. And Gonzo plays Dickens himself as narrator of the tale, following human being Michael Caine as Scrooge as he moves through beautiful and blighted Victorian London on Christmas Eve, confronting the specters of his past behavior and the inevitable place that awaits him in the future.
