Becoming Simulation Faculty – Professional Course Description
Becoming Simulation Faculty is a nationally developed, CPD‑recognised training programme designed by NHS England’s Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) team to prepare multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to design, deliver and evaluate high‑quality simulation‑based education (SBE). It supports educators, clinicians, technicians, managers, and academic partners who wish to embed simulation and immersive learning in patient‑safety, workforce development, and quality‑improvement pathways. This programme responds to the growing demand for skilled simulation faculty capable of applying modern simulation, debriefing models, and immersive technologies effectively and consistently across the health and care system. Its aim is to:
- Develop a competent, recognised multiprofessional simulation faculty.
- Ensure equitable access to high‑quality faculty development nationwide.
- Enhance the quality, safety, and educational impact of simulation activities in healthcare.
The programme reflects national strategy to support innovation in simulation, informed by UK-wide expert contributors and insights from successful international models.
Course Structure
1. eLearning Core Modules - Mandatory completion to attend the Workshop
Learners complete six eLearning topics, delivered through structured sessions introducing foundational knowledge and practical skills in simulation-based education.
These include:
- Introduction to SBE
- Educational theory applied to simulation
- Simulation modalities and their strengths/limitations
- Scenario design essentials
- Human factors and patient safety
- Effective feedback and debriefing fundamentals
The content is written by leading simulation specialists, ensuring a blend of academic theory and real‑world application.
The eLearning programme includes 17 sessions (20–30 minutes each), totalling approximately 7 hours of study.
Completion to be confirmed with Certificate submission prior the Course date
2. Face‑to‑Face Workshop
After completing the eLearning, participants attend a one‑day facilitated workshop that reinforces learning and builds practical capability in:
- Simulation course design
- Scenario delivery
- Debriefing practice
- Faculty roles and team‑based facilitation
Workshops are delivered regionally across NHS England in collaboration with local simulation networks.
Learning Outcomes
- Describe the importance of understanding learner needs, expectations, and concerns when planning, designing and delivering a simulation-based learning experience
- Identify approaches to help align intended learning outcomes with the design and delivery of a simulation-based activity
- Discuss the benefits and challenges of approaches to debriefing and feedback in relation to experiential learning
- Describe how key approaches to evaluation can be used to demonstrate the benefits of simulation-based activities
- Identify your immediate professional development needs as a faculty member and the next steps to help you achieve them
