** Becoming a Court-Aware Therapist: Treating Court Cases with Care has been approved for 2 Credit Hours by:
- NBCC - 2 clock hours (The Mediation Center has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7171. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. The Mediation Center is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs)
- NASW-NC - 2 clock hours
- NCSAPPB - 2 general skill building hours
When mental health professionals have clients who are involved in court proceedings, it can be difficult to keep track of legal requirements. This training will equip participants with the background knowledge and expertise they need to provide effective, informed court-involved treatment in accordance with the law and best therapeutic practices. Presenter Dr. Jeanne Cummings has decades of experience treating and evaluating children and families with a variety of problems and has decades of experience testifying in court. She draws on this experience to provide mental health professionals with skills for each stage of working with court-involved clients. During the 2-hour training, participants will learn about mental health professionals’ responsibility, role, and limitations in court-involved cases, the unique needs of clients involved in court proceedings, as well as concrete skills for this work.
The training will include:
- Best, ethical practices for therapists working with court-involved cases
- How to effectively communicate with clients about your role as a mental health professional
- What resources and options are available to you as you work with court-involved cases
- How bias can manifest in these situations

Presenter
Jeanne Cummings, Ph.D. - Dr. Cummings obtained her degree from UNC-Greensboro and has taught at Auburn University, Guilford College, Warren Wilson College and UNCA. As a child psychologist at Appalachian Hall and in private practice in Asheville, she treated and evaluated children and families with a variety of problems and has decades of experience testifying in court.
