About this Event

Sanctuary through sound: what is it about making music together that provides an immediate sense of belonging, dignity and connection? And how does Dovetail Orchestra, a charity based in Bristol, Cardiff and London that works with people who have been displaced from all over the world, make the most of that potential?

Join us for a discussion and unique practical insights into this question with Dovetail Orchestra's artistic director, Dr Jonathan James, joined by members of the orchestra for live demonstrations of key ideas.

With perspectives on musical creativity, social identity, cross-cultural learning and the deeper meaning of sanctuary, this event is ideal for any interested in current issues around asylum and the power of music to bring people together.

About Jonathan

Dr Jonathan James has been leading creative musical workshops for over thirty years. He began his musical career as a conductor before going into teaching and teacher training, and then became a freelance music educator, working with orchestras, concert venues, community groups and professional ensembles. He ran the Bristol Pre-Conservatoire for 14 years, where collaborative creativity remains a main focus, and this work formed the basis for his PhD.

Jonathan is a visiting teacher in collaborative creativity at the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is a Creative Lead for the National Children's Orchestra, a musicianship tutor for Aldeburgh Young Musicians, and is developing a new model of musicianship for Chethams and Wells Cathedral schools of music.

Another important strand has been his commitment to community music, for which he was awarded a British Empire Medal in 2024. His current project is the Dovetail Orchestra, a charity that brings together displaced peoples from around the world to create music together in Bristol, Cardiff and London.
