Featuring special performance from musician and video artist Kofi Hunter, plus post-screening conversation + Q&A moderated by Timmhotep Aku.
About this Event

Join us for a night dedicated to the drum! Kofi Hunter will be screening his work-in-progress Banned Drums, a video work exploring the history of the drum as a tool of Black culture and its continued oppression inside of the settler-colonial project. Additonally, Hunter will be sharing a special performance beforehand, and following the screening will be in conversation with cultural worker and moderator Timmhotep Aku.

Kofi Hunter imagines a world where Art can transform lives. As an in-demand multi- percussionist Kofi has been given the opportunity to support some of the biggest names in music, from Grammy Winning Jazz Saxophonist Casey Benjamin to Hip Hop Superstar A$AP Ferg.  Kofi along with his brother established an Afro-Diasporic Neo-Folk Percussion and Vocal Group named “Akoko Nante Ensemble.” Akoko Nante has performed at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn Concert Series, and has been featured as a musical guest on VICE’s The Untitled Action Bronson Show. Their debut album “Nkrabea: Destiny” is available on all streaming platforms.

Kofi has composed music for films; “Ori Inu: In Search of Self” by Chelsey O, Documentary “Free Food” by Amandla Baraka, and “The Sound of Southside” by Tyrel Hunt, where Kofi also played the role of “Curtis.”

Timmhotep Aku is a Brooklyn-bred and based cultural worker who has written and edited for Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, NPR Music, Complex, The Fader, XXL, and other publications over his two-decade plus career. Currently he does much of his work under the umbrella of 'Subject To Change', an ongoing multimedia and experiential project that includes event production, curation, journalism, literature, art, pedagogy, and his monthly radio show of the same name which airs on London’s NTS Live.
