Visible mending transforms the act of repair into a creative and intentional gesture. It can be interpreted as a form of protest against a culture of disposability, as a form of designerly repair, and as meditation on both care and continuity. In this hands-on workshop, textile designer Nora Bremer guides participants through the basics of visible mending methods such as sashiko, bead embroidery, and darning. Surplus to essential tools, festival merchandise, including embroidered patches and ribbons of poetry, will be available for use as repair materials.
Visible mending may be approached as a practical act of preservation, an aesthetic experiment, or both. Participants are encouraged to bring a garment or textile in need of repair. If nothing needs mending, bring something to decorate with thread and other embellishments.
Attendance is free of charge, with basic supplies included. Branded mending materials can be purchased for a small fee. No prior experience is required. Welcome!
