About this Event
Say goodbye to cold weather and get ready for the heat, Summertime is coming! But not only that, but it's been a full year of Bad Movie Night Brooklyn! So what better way to kick off another year of goofy garbage AND the Summertime season than with... Kicks! That's right, it's the first ever Anniversary Summer Kick-Off, an action packed double feature, featuring oiled up macho heroes, epic stunts, and machismo so thick you can smell it!
First on the dockett is Expect No Mercy, starring Billy Blanks! Aside from being the inventor of Tae Bo, and possibly the sweatiest man alive, Blanks was part of a handful of 90's action stars notorious for their output during the videostore eras. In this 1995 entry, Blanks plays a Federal Agent tasked with going undercover at a secret training facility, where a maniacal villain (with great hair) is training the next generation of assassins the only way you can in the 90s... Virtual Reality! Filled with great fight choreography, incredibly goofy "futuristic" technology, and hilariously ham-fisted acting, this is a great example of what made Billy Blanks shine on the small-screen! It even got an (incredibly crappy) videogame tie-in that took the visuals and FMV video of Mortal Kombat, and none of the fun or polish!
And speaking of Mortal Kombat... YES! We'll be following up Expect No Mercy with ANOTHER 1995 iconic action flick: The incredibly corny but incredibly awesome Mortal Kombat! With the franchise currently spawning 11+ games, PLUS a new film coming out May 8th, its time to look back to where it all began. Warrior Monk Liu Kang vows to free his brother's soul from the clutches of a wizard named Shang Tsun. He finally gets his chance when he learns that himself, actor Johnny Cage, and cop Sonya Blade have been chosen to represent Earth in an interdimensional Martial Arts Tournament. Acting as their guide is Christopher Lambert, turning in an iconic performance as Raiden, as they go up against franchise favorites like Goro, Kano, Reptile, and the eternal rivals Sub-Zero and Scorpion! Featuring amazing practical effects and groundbreaking (for the time) CGI, this is an absolute blast for newcomers and Kombat fans alike!
Since this is going to be 2 movies, we're going to be kicking off a bit early, with Expect No Mercy starting at 5pm, with a break between the two films.
