About this Event
A conversation about micromomentum, a personal project developed within the MA Biodesign programme. Through collaboration with Sporosarcina Pasteurii, a bacterium that precipitates calcium carbonate, the project explores how to co-design with microbes to grow rings.
Attendees will learn the basics of Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP), where bacteria colonize soft structures and gradually turn them into solid mineral forms. The event will also explore its application in jewellery making and why this approach offers an alternative to traditional extractive practices in jewellery production.
Through visual documentation of experiments, both successful and unsuccessful, participants will gain insight into the realities of working with microorganisms and their biochemical processes within creative practice. These records help uncover subtle details that deepen the understanding of working with bacterial collaborators. It explores how to work with unpredictability and embrace material transformation.
Meet your instructor
Andrea Carrera, with a background in product design, is a biodesigner and educator at IED Madrid exploring the enigmatic beauty of living systems.
She equips microorganisms to actively engage in both the creative and production stages of design, uncovering the hidden potential within the microbial world and reimagining the boundaries between life and creation. Through her teaching, she fosters critical thinking and invites students to question established paradigms in design.
