In the Afro-Cuban religion of Santería, "Añá" is the spirit that resides within the sacred batá drums. Through these drums, it acts as a medium to communicate with the Orishas, the deities in the religion. This concert is NOT a Santaría ritual, but it does feature a Santaría-inspired work of music: the magnificent and almost exorcistic 'Toque a Oggún y Shangó' by Louis Franz Aguirre.
Aguirre is paired with music by his compatriot, Tania León — the grand old lady of Cuban modernism.
Additionally, we will present works by some of today's most adventurous composers: Liza Lim, Misato Mochizuki and Olga Neuwirth.
