Artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and professor and scholar Michael Nardone discuss the intersection of art and technology.
About this Event

As part of MOCA’s Our Ideas of our Time series, MOCA Senior Curator Ylva Rouse will moderate a conversation with Artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and professor and scholar Michael Nardone, discussing the history of the use of digital technologies in art. We will explore how artists have long subverted the intended uses of these technologies, laying bare the ethical and moral impacts of the ever-increasing digital landscape in our society.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, author of MOCA JAX’s current interactive Project Atrium installation, has been working more than 30 years at the intersection of architecture and performance art, creating platforms for public participation using technologies such as robotics, digital fountains, computerized surveillance, media walls, and telematic networks.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was born in Mexico City in 1967. In 1989 he received a B.Sc. in Physical Chemistry from Concordia University in Montréal, Canada. Lozano-Hemmer has exhibited his work around the globe, and he was the first artist to represent Mexico at the Venice Biennale with an exhibition at Palazzo Van Axel in 2007.

Formerly a postdoctoral fellow with the Research Chair in Digital Textualities at the Université de Montréal and a visiting fellow at the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing at the University of Pennsylvania, Michael Nardone is Media Historian at Antimodular, the research studio of artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Nardone’s writings and editorial projects explore and experiment with histories of literature, techniques of embodied performance, and cultures of mediation. His recent and forthcoming works include Aural Poetics (an edited work on sound and composition across the arts), Convivialities (a book of dialogues), Yellow Towel: A Score (a collaboration with choreographer Dana Michel), the Documents on Expanded Poetics book series (which he co-edits), The Transatlantic Conversation (a translation of Abigail Lang’s monograph on contemporary French and US poetry), and The Ritualites (a book of poems).

Cocktails and SoulFULL Eats Charcuterie "Board in a Box" will be available during this event at the MOCA Bar. Pre-order recommended for charcuterie boxes, which can be found during registration. Beverages and snacks are also available for purchase from Setlan Coffee Co., in the museum's lobby.

This program is part of MOCA's Ideas of Our Time, a free lecture series providing a forum for creative dialogue with artists, educators, and others around some of the most vital art and ideas of our time.

Art & Technology Round Table takes place during VyStar Free Saturdays @ MOCA, which provides free admission to all every Saturday. Feel free to explore the galleries after the program.

SPACE IS LIMITED. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.
