Annual Reviews of EHCPs and our local plan to work through the backlog

You might have seen a recent Local Government Ombudsman publication, highlighting the backlog of annual review work here in Lewisham related to our children & young people with EHC Plans.
The annual review process related to children and young people’s EHCPs is a statutory process Local Authorities must comply with to ensure that your child’ EHCP is reviewed within statutory timeframes, and decisions are made on whether an EHCP requires amendments, an EHCP should be ceased to be maintained, a reassessment of need may be required etc.
The LA has identified a backlog related to this important statutory work and we want to use this opportunity to talk to you about how we are addressing this.
We want to reassure you that we are working on the backlog identified and many of you will have experienced timely annual reviews of your children’s EHCP’s (as this is delivered by the schools/education settings your children attend), but may have not received the formal decision from the LA on the back of this annual review having taken place.
We do want to invite you to talk through our mitigation plans as well as ensuring we hear and address any concerns you might have related to the annual review compliance.
Colleagues from the statutory SEN Service of the Council will be there to advise you on the above matters, ensuring that annual reviews take place on time and you are notified of the LA’s decisions related to your child’s annual review of their EHCP. We have also advised your children’s schools/education settings on this.
