Personnel Histories: Tracing Our Past, Reflecting on Our Future’

Professor Martin Hurcombe, University of Bristol, and former AUPHF+ President:French and Francophone studies have become increasingly self-reflective and forward-looking, with many discussions focusing on the decolonization and decentring of teaching and research. Here, though, I want to look back at our history and more particularly the story of one of my predecessors. This story starts with a portrait wedged behind a photocopier in Bristol and takes us to postwar New York via the trenches of the First World War and Algiers. It’s the story of the discipline’s origins in the UK and its relationship to the geo-political upheavals of the early twentieth century. But it is also a possible point of reference for orientating ourselves in the present as these tectonic plates shift once again.’
