To open the season, Bozar presents Violin Phase, one of the four movements from Fase, Four Movements to the Music by Steve Reich, the first performance by choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, created in 1982. De Keersmaeker wrote Violin Phase, the third movement of Fase, at the Dance Department of Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, and it was first performed at the Festival of Early Modern Dance in Purchase, NY, in April 1981.
De Keersmaeker uses Reich’s music structure to develop an independent movement language that not only illustrates the music but adds a new dimension to it. The movements, initially synchronous, shift in circular patterns with strict repetitions, playing brilliantly with the music’s formalism and drama. This iconic piece, directly echoing A Little Bit of the Moon by Rabih Mroué and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, will be performed four times on September 22. The performance, featuring two dancers including De Keersmaeker herself, will trace beautiful rose patterns in the sand, visible from above in the Rotunda of the Galerie Ravenstein.
