Andrea Cui Quintet ft. Aya Sekine (Detroit) @Eden Jazz Night!โจ
This one-night-only collaboration brings together trumpeter Andrea Cui and Detroit-based pianist Aya Sekine, a long-time friend of the Singapore music scene, for an evening of bebop, straight-ahead, and a showcase of Detroitโs deep jazz legacy.
At its core, this performance recognizes jazz as Black American Music, with its own history, discipline, and cultural roots. Now based in Detroit, Aya brings direct experience from one of its central communities, including her work with Wendell Harrison and the legacy of Tribe Records. With her invaluable expertise, she hopes to provide a space for each musician in the band to explore and develop their voices.
The repertoire includes shared favorites alongside works connected to Marcus Belgrave, Phil Ranelin, Lawrence Williams, Donald Byrd, and the Lyman Woodard Organization. The quintet features some of finest young voices of the Singaporean jazz scene, with Justin Ng on saxophone and flute, Teng Siheng on bass, and Khoo Shen-En on drums.
