Avourneen, one of Colorado’s most successful and innovative Celtic bands, will celebrate the release of their new, full-length album "Way Stations" at a special performance at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 28 at the Roxy on Broadway, 554 S. Broadway in Denver. "Way Stations," a 15-track release that features a mix of original compositions and traditional Irish music, is Avourneen’s first full release since 2020. The release show at the Roxy will feature new material from the record and include special guest musicians who also appear on the album. Avourneen’s new album includes an impressive mix of sounds, styles and instrumentation, with moods that vary from spirited, traditional Irish ballads and drinking songs like “The Hills of Connemara,” “From Clare to Here” and “Clasped to the Pig” to new original ballads like “Doolin Waltz,” “Stoney Steps” and
“Saint-Rémy.” The album also features instrumental sets that combine original and traditional jigs and reels (“Far From Home/The South Shore,” “Cunner Point/Across the Black River”), as well as a pair of original waltzes (“Seaglass Beach,” “Austin Station.”)
All of this music comes to life through varied instrumentation from Avourneen’s core players, Adam Goldstein (guitar, Irish bouzouki), Cieran Morden (fiddle, mandolin, piano) and Alice Alister (bass). The album also includes guest appearances from some of Colorado’s most accomplished Celtic, classical and folk musicians, including Katie Burns on cello, John Lynskey on accordion, Rodney Sauer on accordion and Marty Smith on Irish bouzouki.
The songs on this new record speak to a common theme of place – there are heartfelt tributes to spots spanning the globe, from small villages and towns in Ireland, Portugal and France to idyllic islands in Maine and imagined transit stations in Texas. In original songs like “Lakes of Killarney” and in traditional ballads like “The Ballad of St. Anne’s Reel,” the band taps into a throughline that’s fundamental in the Irish musical tradition – a yearning for faraway shores and the important connections they represent.
