About this Event
For this One-Day Choir we’ll be singing “Bread and Roses”, a song of protest and women’s suffrage based on a 1911 poem by James Oppenheim. The song originated as part of the 1912 Lawrence textile strike, as immigrant women demanded higher wages and better treatment. The “bread” represents a fair pay for their labor while the “roses” represents dignity and quality of life.
During our time together we will:
- Play singing games to activate our voices, bodies, and connection to one another
- Work through the song section by section, infusing some musicality as we go
- Discuss the lyrics of the song and what meaning we can find in it
- Sing through the song a few times in different formations and experience the music in unique ways!
