About this Event
Join this guided walk through Abney Park Cemetery to explore stories of place, people, and ecology, and to reflect on how the cycles of life, death, regeneration, and community coexist within this unique landscape.
As we move slowly along the paths, we will gather beneath ancestral trees and observe the woodland’s ongoing processes of renewal, growth, and decay. Spending time among these older trees, we will learn how they support rich, biodiverse habitats and how the Park functions as both a place of remembrance and a living woodland.
Along the way, we will pause at burial places to listen to stories from the lives of people interred here, learning about their work, values, and lasting contributions to their communities. These stories draw on community‑led research by Abney Unearthed, revealing how individual lives continue to shape the park’s shared history.
Abney Park holds a special place in London, offering a strong sense of belonging rooted in shared histories and collective care. Conceived in 1840 as a radical, non‑denominational cemetery and public arboretum, it was imagined as an inclusive civic space shaped by ideals of social justice, education, and shared access.
The walk is open to all ages and gently paced, offering time to listen, reflect, and experience this much‑loved green haven together.
