The Fight for Culture
Everyone agrees free speech is under threat—they just can't agree on who's doing the threatening. Conservatives point to Shane Gillis getting axed from SNL over old jokes, Dave Chappelle facing boycotts for his trans material, and comedians self-censoring to avoid the mob. Liberals point to Colbert and Kimmel getting heat for anti-Trump bits, the Washington Post gutting its staff after Bezos's takeover, and advertisers fleeing any content that offends the right. Both sides claim they're the real victims of a culture that punishes dissent. So who's actually getting canceled—and who's just facing consequences?
Maybe the better question is whether we've built a culture where anyone with enough leverage can silence speech they don't like. Is this just the marketplace of ideas working as intended—audiences and advertisers voting with their attention—or something more corrosive? Do we have consistent principles about when public pressure is legitimate accountability versus when it's a chilling effect? And if your answer changes depending on who's getting silenced, what does that tell you? Join us for a debate that will make everyone a little uncomfortable.
