About this Event

For CRAE's second international webinar, we will be joined by Prof. Kumagaya and Dr Ayaya from the University of Tokyo to introduce the idea of tōjisha-kenkyū.

We will have a translator on the Zoom webinar. Attendees will be able to select the audio channel to hear the language of choice, as well as the option to mute the original audio instead of hearing it at a lower volume. With the time difference, we will be meeting at 9 am. The webinar will be recorded if you cannot be there.

In Japan, a radical approach called tōjisha-kenkyū has emerged to challenge the narratives that dominate mainstream psychiatry. In tōjisha-kenkyū, which roughly translates as ‘self-directed research’, people with hermeneutically marginalized experiences including disabilities and/or mental health conditions or neurodivergent learn to study their own experiences. During the past few decades, this approach has grown from a grassroots movement created by people with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, to a revolutionary method for self-advocacy, and coproduction of research. This talk will introduce the history, philosophy, and some of the specific cases of tōjisha-kenkyū and explain its significance from the perspective of epistemic injustice.

Satsuki Ayaya, Ph.D. is a project associate professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology/ Center for Coproduction of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity, The University of Tokyo and a chair of OTOEMOJITE (tōjisha-kenkyū group led by neurodivergent people). She began her research in 2006, and in 2020, she received his PhD from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Tokyo. She has been challenging the existing concept of autism, which allows attributing the cause of problems in interpersonal relationships to intra-personal characteristics, which makes it possible that the cause of conflicts between autistic people and the majority is unilaterally attributed to the Autistic.

Shinichiro Kumagaya, M.D., Ph.D. is a professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology/ Center for Coproduction of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity, at the University of Tokyo, and a member of the Science Council of Japan and a chair of Disability Policy Committee for the Cabinet Office. He received M.D. from the University of Tokyo in 2001. From 2001 to 2002, he was a pediatric resident at The University of Tokyo Hospital. From 2002 to 2004, he was a general pediatrician at Chiba-Nishi General Hospital. From 2004 to 2005, he was a pediatric cardiologist at Saitama Medical University Hospital. In 2009, he joined the University of Tokyo. His research interests include Tojisha-Kenkyu, pediatrics, developmental sciences and disability studies.
