Revel in Roger McGough’s plentiful store of warmth, wisdom and wit – Lauded as “the patron saint of poetry” by Carol Ann Duffy, Roger McGough is a national treasure.
Roger was one of the Liverpool poets, alongside Adrian Henri and Brian Patten, who influenced popular culture in the Sixties. The Mersey Sound, published in 1967 is one of the bestselling poetry anthologies of all time, selling over a million copies. In the 1960’s with John Gorman, and Mike McGear he formed The Scaffold, performing a combination of comic songs, poetry and sketches who had several top 20 singles, including the hit song ‘Lily the Pink’.
At age 88, he has published over 100 poetry books for adults and children, gigs consistently, and is the host of Radio 4’s Flagship programme ‘Poetry Please’. Roger’s poetry remains timely and full of laughs, he is writing new material all the time.
He returns to Liverpool sure to strike a nostalgic chord with his local crowd.
This unique evening is a Smithdown Litfest event in partnership with the Research Institute for Literature and Cultural History at Liverpool John Moores University.
Getting to the venue:
Parking is limited. Please come by foot or public transport if you are near and able. If driving, look at parking in the perimeter of Sefton Park - giving enough time to walk to the venue. Please do not park in Cheltenham Avenue or York Avenue.
