Rock 'n' Roll Book Club welcomes the legendary, irrepressible DON LETTS back to Walthamstow Trades Hall. if you came to Don's last visit you'll know what a fantastic night we have in store.
The filmmaker, musician, DJ, broadcaster, social commentator, husband, and father – has always defied conformity. A British born son of Windrush parents, he seamlessly pivoted between London’s punk and reggae scenes earning his reputation as the ‘Rebel Dread’.
In his biography There and Black Again now available in a revised, updated paperback edition - Don looks back on an exceptional life and tells tales of him befriending Bob Marley after sneaking into his hotel, joining The Clash’s White Riot tour as manager of The Slits, and becoming one of the UK’s most highly regarded video directors during the MTV boom.
Told in part as scenes from a movie shot on locations including London, Kingston, New York City, Los Angeles, Windhoek, Salt Lake City, and Goldeneye, There and Black Again co-stars a cast of hundreds including Joe Strummer, John Lydon, Bob Marley, Chrissie Hynde, Chris Blackwell, Paul McCartney, Nelson Mandela, Keith Richards, Patti Smith, Chuck D, Malcolm McLaren, and Vivienne Westwood.
Don will also screen TWO SEVENS CLASH: DREAD MEETS PUNK ROCKERS
Shot, directed, and narrated by Don Letts, this archive-based film looks at the myth and the reality of the 'punky-reggae party'.
Two Sevens Clash: Dread Meets Punk Rockers explores the links Don forged between the roots reggae sounds of his culture and the quickly growing punk scene in London in the 1970s.
With participation from The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Siouxsie Sioux, Big Youth, The Slits, Neneh Cherry, Sly Dunbar, Paul Weller, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Linton Kwesi Johnson, and others.
Vital Sound DJs will be laying down the soundtrack for the night.
