About this Event
The "Café Cantantes" appeared in Spain in the mid -19th century, as private premises open to the public for their entertainment, in which singing and guitar playing were the main attractions.
They played an important role in flamenco's preservation and development and after its prohibition, during Franco's dictatorship, it began to arouse great cultural interest among the general public, ceasing to be known by a minority locked up in bars, taverns, or private parties and reaching social classes, even outside the Andalusian borders.
Torpedo Theater is happy to host this series of "Café Cantantes" every last Thursday of the month.

Vangelis Chatzigiannis, based in Rotterdam, NL, is a versatile artist skilled in singing, guitar, and oud. His artistic journey ignited at 15 when he enrolled in Thessaloniki's music high school. Concurrently, he pursued studies at the Music Conservatory of Northern Greece, culminating in graduation from the classical music theory department.
He flourished as a professional singer and guitarist across Greece, crossing paths with Agathonas Iakovidis and joining his band as a singer and guitar player. Relocating to Rotterdam in 2019, Vangelis pursued a Bachelor's degree at Codarts University, delving into Ottoman singing, makam theory, and improvisation. An Erasmus exchange led him to Cordoba, Spain, for a year of intensive flamenco singing study, profoundly expanding his perception of singing.
In the summer of 2023, he completed his Bachelor's degree. Presently, he graces stages as a flamenco and a greek music singer across the Netherlands, Greece, and Europe, captivating audiences as a compelling singer.
