Chicago-based jazz vocalist Alyssa Allgood has been recognized as an artist who “impressively sings, scats and writes original lyrics” (DownBeat Magazine). Her voice is “radiant…strong and coolly expressive. She sings with a maturity marked by restraint and nuance” (Neil Tesser, Grammy Award-winning writer and critic).
Alyssa has a strong affinity for hard bop music and her voice perfectly bridges this style with a more modern approach, evident on her debut album, “Out of the Blue”. Released in Fall 2016, this album reimagines the classic Blue Note Records era with original arrangements and lyrics. The album received wide critical acclaim and was hailed as a “Best Release of 2016” by The Huffington Post, All About Jazz, Jazz History Online, The L.A. Jazz Scene and a “Best Debut Release of 2016” by The New York City Jazz Record. Critics consistently praised Alyssa’s instrumental approach and accomplished scat and vocalese singing.
Alyssa performed at the 2016 Chicago Jazz Festival to a standing room only crowd and was met with a standing ovation and sold-out CD sales. She has also appeared at The Green Mill, The Jazz Showcase, Fitzgerald’s Nightclub, Merriman’s Playhouse, The Whiskey Lounge and as a special guest with groups at The Taste of Chicago and Andy’s Jazz Club. Alyssa headlined the 2016 Ottawa 2 Rivers Wine Fest, which featured a lineup of Chicago’s jazz women.
She actively participates in jazz competitions around the world, and recently won the First Annual Ella Fitzgerald Competition held in Washington D.C. She has also been named a Top 15 Finalist in the 2016 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, a 2016 Jazz Fellow through the Luminarts Cultural Organization in Chicago and second place winner in the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Jazz Voice Competition. Alyssa placed as a Top 10 semifinalist in the 2015 Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition; where she competed live in Switzerland for a jury presided by jazz legend Al Jarreau.Alyssa Allgood’s debut album, “Out of the Blue”, was named a Best Release of 2016 by The Huffington Post, All About Jazz, Jazz History Online, The L.A. Jazz Scene, Jazz Views and a Best Debut Release of 2016 by The New York City Jazz Record.
"When she stretched phrases, elongated words, rewrote rhythms and remade melody lines, you knew she was a jazz singer to the core...she's off to a remarkable start, a young singer of unusual accomplishment and extraordinary potential."
-Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune
"Allgood impressively sings, scats and writes original lyrics. She is a winner... well rounded and grounded. Fun to listen to, she can only become more so." 4 star review
-Bob Protzman, Downbeat Magazine
“…a taste of Annie Ross… Allgood is a hip singer who clearly articulates and scats well … What’s not to enjoy?”
-Robert Rusch, Cadence Jazz Magazine
“Allgood is an astonishingly mature singer for her years; her comfort with scatting and bebop phrasing, generous world view in her words and skillful arrangements speak to an emerging talent of considerable strength.”
-Suzanne Lorge, The New York City Jazz Record
“…a debut album that showcases her original lyrics, smart arrangements, and her radiant voice, soft but strong and coolly expressive. She sings with a maturity marked by restraint and nuance.”
-Neil Tesser, Grammy Award-winning Writer and Critic
“A fullness of expression found in so few vocalists cut from current cloth…she is quintessential in every regard. She treats the art of wordless singing as it should be—which is to say, as an instrument in its own right.” 5 star review
-Tyran Grillo, All About Jazz
“Vocalese is a difficult art, as is scat singing, but Alyssa displays her accomplishment in these areas. Alyssa Allgood is a name to look out for and remember.”
-Bruce Crowther, Jazz Mostly
“She writes excellent lyrics, scats very well (better than most) and always swings. Alyssa Allgood has created one of the finest jazz vocal albums of the year.”
-Scott Yanow, L.A. Jazz Scene
“Alyssa Allgood may be young, but her voice is timeless. She grooves effortlessly and proves to be an expert scatter…a victor in every sense.”
-Carol Banks Weber, AXS
“Her vocalese lyrics have great clarity and the same adjective could be used to describe her singing voice. There is little artifice in her delivery—she has an innate ability to find the center of the music and she doesn’t waste notes when she sings the melodies or when she scats… I suspect (and hope) that we will hear much more from this abundantly talented young lady.”
-Thomas Cunniffe, Jazz History Online
“Expressive vocalist Alyssa Allgood possesses charming versatility…she uses her agile, lithe vocal chords as an improvisational instrument, matching her sidemen’s ad lib phrases.”
-Hrayr Attarian, Chicago Jazz Magazine
“Alyssa Allgood has done the iconic Blue Note label proud in a most unexpected way… There’s much to savor here from Allgood…It’s all good. Great in fact.”
-Ken Franckling, Jazz Notes
"A triumphant homage... just a fantastic production from beginning to end."
-D. Glenn Daniels, The Jazz Page
“Allgood demonstrates equal facility scatting, singing wordless vocalese, and writing lyrics…expect to hear a lot more from her in the future.” 4.5 star review
-Mark Sullivan, All About Jazz
“There are jazz singers and then there are real jazz singers. Alyssa Allgood is one of the real ones. On her … stunning vocalese project… Out of the Blue, the Chicago native proves why.“
-Mike Greenblatt, The Classical Arts
“…a very impressive record by a serious singer who also knows how to have fun… She has a solid musician’s self-confidence, and a clear voice … She is never over shadowed by her outstanding instrumentalists. She is one of the cats. I think that is something that Annie Ross herself would respect and appreciate. And that, my fellow lovers of song, is high praise indeed.”
-Mark Christian Scott, Mark Heard It First
“It’s only a matter of time before her torch is lighting up everything everywhere. Clearly a new star on the rise, this is your golden opportunity to say you were there first.”
-Chris Spector, Midwest Record
“Alyssa Allgood is to be commended for tackling some difficult intervals and challenging jazz compositions… she’s pitch-perfect, as well as a fine songwriter.”
-Dee Dee McNeil, Musical Memoirs
“…an album that brings an appealing new singer to our attention. This is like hearing Annie Ross for the first time way back when she hung out with Jon Hendricks and Dave Lambert. Alyssa has that same scat/vocalese feel to the bebop lines that much of Out of the Blue is based on.”
-Lance Liddle, Bebop Spoken Here
