The Refugee Action Coalition has campaigned for the rights of refugees since 2000. We are holding this discussion against the backdrop of war and genocide, and a rise in racism against migrants, particularly refugees and Aboriginal people.
The bipartisan anti-refugee policies that we’ve seen for three decades are intensifying. Most recently, the Migration Amendment (2026 Measures No 1) Bill 2026 (or the ‘Refugee Ban Bill’) was introduced to Federal Parliament on 10 March 2026. It bars people fleeing war zones such as Iran and Lebanon from entering Australia on temporary visas, including tourist visas. This draconian bill, backed by Labor, the Coalition and One Nation (the same parties currently backing US-Israeli wars), has been universally condemned by refugee rights organisations. For example, Asylum Seekers Centre CEO Elijah Buol said, “Seeking asylum is a human right. It is not determined by nationality, profile, and platform. It is universal. This law is an affront to those rights.”
One Nation is benefiting from the ‘mainstream racism’ of the two major parties, consistently polling at 25% or higher. A similar surge in far right sentiment has occurred across the Western world. But recent events in the UK show that Nigel Farage’s Reform, which has led opinion polls for months, can be defeated, both on the streets and at the ballot box. Similarly the mass mobilisations against the murderous actions of ICE in the US have inspired anti-racists around the world.
All are welcome to this meeting, where we will also organise upcoming events in the refugee rights campaign, notably the Palm Sunday rally against war and for refugees: Sunday 29 March 2pm, Belmore Park (Palm Sunday rallies are also happening in other capital cities)
THE REFUGEE ACTION COALITION SYDNEY meets fortnightly, 6pm Mondays at NSWTF, 23 Mary St Surry Hiils. Next mtgs are 30 March, 13 April: [email protected] | 0417275713 or 0422078376| refugeeaction.org.au | @rac_sydney | fb.com/RACsydney | twitter.com/rac_sydney
