Some history: Pchum Ben, which falls on the 15th day of the 10th Khmer month, begins on October 1st this year and marks the start of a 15 day religious festival in Cambodia. The Cambodian buddhists believe that every year the souls of their ancestors are released for 15 days. Pchum Ben marks the start of the journey of souls to purgatory, that in-between place that is neither heaven nor hell. The course of their journey will be decided by their karma and by the offerings made by their living relatives during Pchum Ben.
At the restaurant, we will be honoring our ancestors with offerings and a prayer sand mound with candles and incense.
How to celebrate on your own:
Visit a temple. You’re more than welcome to visit local Cambodian temples to offer gifts to ancestors, our favorites are Watt Dhammacakkaram ( South Seattle) & Wat Samakki Ratanaram (Tacoma). Donate if you can!!
Do something special for both your living and late parents/grandparents to honor them.
Make Bai Ben. Bai Ben are balls of sticky rice cooked in coconut milk that are made during the festival and offered to the late ancestors with no family.
We hope to see you at our celebration! It’s also @karu1001and @yourcousinbi birthdays 👀
See you there!
