Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear from the virtuoso American soprano Lucy Shelton, in two events:
- Workshop and lecture recital, in conversation with Amber Evans (4-6pm, 28 October)
- Masterclass with invited singers, focusing on post-tonal modernist music (3.30-6pm, 29 October)
In the workshop and lecture recital (28th Oct), Shelton and Evans will share insights into the ways that post-tonal, modernist music moves from score to performance, focusing on Shelton's own pedagogical practice and 'hacks'. Drawing on her long career and personal experience of working directly with some of the most celebrated and notorious figures in postwar modernist composition, we will gain insights into how Shelton navigates this repertoire, with opportunities to consider the historical, archival, analytical and creative implications, and ultimately new frames for thinking about music that is too often dismissed as merely hard work.
In the masterclass (29th Oct), Shelton will work with a group of singers from across the UK, focusing on a range of music linked to the concert and workshop. This is a must for composers and singers, and all those working within new (and old new) music. Not to be missed!

This double-header follows the Manchester performance of Arnold Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, and Hanns Eisler’s Fourteen Ways to Describe the Rain. Featuring Shelton, it will take place at The International Anthony Burgess Centre, 7pm, Monday 27 October.
