What is Fusion dance?
In the US and UK, fusion initially grew out of the Blues dance scene, where dancers began to experiment with mixing different styles and dancing to new music genres.
While different fusion dance events can vary in their focus, fusion is generally:
- A partnered dance, where two (or sometimes more!) people come together to co-create
- Danced to a variety of musical genres (some popular genres include blues, pop, tango, dubstep, electronica, hip hop, Latin and more
- Is centered around playfulness, openness and exploration - There are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ steps in fusion. As long as you’re having fun and being safe, you can create just about anything.
Fusion dancers may come from a wide variety of backgrounds including blues, tango, ballet, breakdancing, swing, contact improv, salsa, bachata, Zouk, ballroom, contemporary, and more. Every fusion dance looks different, and that’s what makes them so great!
Community Code of Conduct
Generally speaking, the following Code of Conduct will apply across most events in this group:
1) Treat everyone with respect and dignity. Discrimination will not be tolerated.
2) Check-in on comfort levels: Fusion dancers join us from all sorts of different dance backgrounds, which is what makes this scene so great! What may seem normal to you may not be normal for someone else, and vice versa. Please ask your partner about their comfort levels before doing dips, lifts, close embrace, or body rolls.
3) Ask about preferred roles: When asking someone to dance, ask if they would like to lead, follow, or switch. Some dancers may prefer an opposite role than what you might be accustomed to.
4) Turning down a dance: It is important that everyone feels comfortable with who they dance with. It is okay to turn down a dance for whatever reason, or without giving a reason, and declining to dance with one person does not preclude dancing with someone else. If someone turns down an offer to dance, don’t worry, many other people will likely be delighted to dance with you instead.
5) No aerials of anyone where the legs are above waist height, we do not want to cause injuries
