The Talk

In this talk, Geraint Franklin considers six ‘decisive moments’ where structural engineers and other designers came together to develop new approaches to construction techniques and materials. He looks at innovation in concrete shells, the revival of structural timber, tensile structures, space structures and post-tensioned stone.

What are the connecting themes, and what can we learn from these episodes?



The Speaker

Geraint Franklin is an architectural historian, specialising in buildings after 1945. He’s an architectural investigator at Historic England, and his latest book is High-Tech Britain: Buildings of the Space Age (2026).



The Host

Webb Yates is an award winning structural, civil, and building services engineering design practice, known for a collaborative and creative approach to design. Through these sessions, they aim to create space within the local design community for open, cross-disciplinary conversations about how we shape the built environment.
