Advanced Concepts in Hip & Groin Rehabilitation


This one-day advanced course is designed to provide musculoskeletal therapists interested in hip and groin pathologies a comprehensive understanding of complex hip and groin pathologies, focusing on hip instability, dysplasia, femoral and pelvic bone stress injuries and return to running. The course aims to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively diagnose, manage, and rehabilitate these challenging conditions.


Course Content


1. Hip Instability: Aetiology and Pathophysiology

- Explore the factors contributing to hip instability, including morphological variants, kinematics, neuromuscular function, and joint protection mechanisms.

- Understand the biomechanical implications and clinical manifestations of hip instability.


2. Differential Diagnosis and Assessment

- Learn advanced subjective screening techniques and objective examination protocols for hip instability and related conditions.

- Master clinical and medical diagnostic tests, strength assessments, and specialized evaluation techniques for accurate diagnosis.


3. Rehabilitation Strategies for Hip Instability

- Develop a comprehensive understanding of load management principles and exercise rehabilitation strategies for the unstable hip.

- Gain insights into key milestones and progressions for a safe return to running and sports participation.


4. Femoral and Pelvic Bone Stress Injuries

- Explore the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis of femoral and pelvic bone stress injuries (BSI).

- Acquire evidence-based management strategies and referral pathways for optimal patient care.


5. Return to Running in Hip and Groin Pathologies

- Understand the intricate process of returning to running after hip and groin pathologies.

- Learn strategies to facilitate a safe and successful transition, minimizing the risk of setbacks and optimizing performance.


Target Audience: This course is designed for physiotherapists, osteopaths, sports therapists, and chiropractors with at least one year of musculoskeletal experience and an interest in managing hip and groin pain in the active individual.


Course Delivery: The course will be delivered through lectures, case studies, and practical demonstrations, providing a well-rounded learning experience. Participants can engage in interactive discussions and hands-on activities, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the course content.

Course Tutors:


Benoy Mathew: MSc, MCSP, PGCert MSK US,

Advanced Practice Physiotherapist/Lower Limb Specialist/MSK Sonographer

Benoy is a highly specialist physiotherapist and Advance Practice Physiotherapist, working in London, in both the NHS and private practice. He has been working as a physiotherapist for more than 25 years with the last 15 years, specialising in lower limb pathologies. He is a full-time clinician, and his typical caseload is complex second opinion cases, who have failed traditional rehab. He is passionate about the application of research in clinical practice and is involved in regular teaching on multiple courses, both in the UK and overseas.


More than 3000 participants have attended his courses in the last 11 years. He is also a Master Trainer in Shockwave therapy and is the UK head of education for shockwave courses. He is also a trained MSK Sonographer and injection therapist and uses diagnostic ultrasound in his clinical practice. He is the lead editor of the international best-selling textbook ‘Hip and Knee Pain Disorders’ which was published in June 2022. He also works with Physio tutors on multiple online courses.

Callum East: MSc, BSc (Hons), MCSP, MMACP

First Contact Practitioner & Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist


Callum is a senior musculoskeletal physiotherapist with an extensive background in sports rehabilitation and strength & conditioning. He currently holds multiple roles working as a First Contact Physiotherapist in primary care, consulting in private practice in Hertfordshire and also contracts for GB & England Hockey. Clinically, he has a special interest in the sporting lower limb; particularly hip and groin injuries, tendinopathy and exercise-induced leg pain.


Callum is passionate about applying research to clinical practice; last year he presented his master’s research at a sports medicine conference in London and at the IADMS Symposium in Columbus Ohio, USA. He is currently involved in mentoring university MACP students and has delivered lectures on lower limb musculoskeletal pathologies. Callum is passionate about teaching rehab professionals competent musculoskeletal assessments, drawing on his experience in strength & conditioning to provide education on exercise prescription, program design and return to sport.
