Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches participants to help someone experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.
About this Event

What is Adult Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is the initial help given to a person showing symptoms of mental illness or in a mental health crisis (severe depression, psychosis, panic attack, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, etc.) until appropriate professional or other help, including peer and family support, can be engaged.

Mental Health First Aid teaches participants:

  • Potential warning signs and risk factors for substance use disorders and mental illness (including depression, anxiety, substance use, and disorders in which psychosis may occur)
  • Impact of mental and substance use disorder and common mental health challenges
  • 5-step action plan (ALGEE) to assess a situation and provide help
  • Local community resources and where to turn for help

These courses prepare members of the public to provide Mental Health First Aid to those in need.

This training is funded by a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration(SAMHSA) Mental Health Awareness Training (MHAT) Grant. The training fee goes towards supporting future sustainability of our mental health and suicide prevention initiatives.
