Forsyths is delighted to welcome back pianist Adam Davies for an exploration of the remarkable piano works of Anthony Hedges (1931-2021), a composer whose diverse output extended far beyond his well-known light orchestral and brass band pieces. Born in Bicester and educated at Oxford, Hedges served as a lecturer at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire and Hull University while making his home in Beverley. A complete musician: pianist, conductor, critic, and advocate for contemporary composers, Hedges created an extensive catalog of piano works that have been championed by distinguished performers including Anthony Goldstone, Caroline Clemmow, Keith Swallow, and Martin Roscoe.
This recital features key works from Hedges’ piano repertoire, including the spirited First Prelude from his Five Preludes (1959), his first published piano pieces; the substantial and dramatic Sonata No. 1 (1974), demonstrating his mature compositional voice; the charming Variants (1990), written for Scunthorpe Festival; and the evocative Five Aphorisms (1990) with their vibrant sound-worlds and Romantic echoes.
The program is beautifully complemented by beloved childhood pieces from Schumann and Debussy, alongside Mozart’s delightful Sonata in A major, K.331, featuring the famous Rondo alla turca finale.
Adam is currently undertaking a multi-year project to record the complete piano works of Anthony Hedges. If you would like to support this project, you can .
