About this Event
Celebrating the launch of his record label, Actualité, and its first release, Horizon, artist David Hartt will play records from his personal collection interspersed with commentary and reflection alongside his long-time collaborator, sound specialist Eugene Lew. The program will offer insight into the making of Horizon and Hartt’s overall practice by weaving together his musical selections and personal anecdotes to impart the documentary and conceptual elements of his work.
Horizon was a film installation created specifically for Skyscrapers by the Roots, a group exhibition presented in 2025 in the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) spaces at Place Ville Marie, which explores the legacy of late modernism in architecture. MAC curator, François LeTourneux, notes, "While steering clear of a strictly autobiographical approach, Horizon draws on [Hartt’s] personal experience to examine the complex relationship between identity, design, architecture, and urban planning within a specific cultural context and temporal framework.” The soundtrack, a limited 300-edition release on 180-gram vinyl, features music composed by Canadian multi-instrumentalist and composer, Joseph Shabason, and Toronto-based musician, Thom Gill, as well as vibraphonist/marimbist Michael Davidson. It includes a breathtaking interpretation of the song "Quiet Life," written by David Sylvian and featured on Japan's 1979 record of the same name.
