The Acid Cole Trio is a group of veteran LA jazz musicians who have played together in various groups for thirty years. We banded together to further develop the first great jazz trio format starting in the 40’s: the piano/bass/guitar trio pioneered by Nat Cole, Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson. Jazz was a music for bars and small clubs; the Cole and Tatum trios without drums were suitable for high-end restaurants, as well as small bars, allowing the wealthy, primarily white clientele to hear artistic jazz, as opposed to pop or cocktail music. There could be a large amount of “arranged” material between the piano and guitar, both harmonic AND melodic instruments. The intricacy, while subtle, is strikingly effective. As the music became more in the concert halls, groups with drummers became more popular (the Peterson and Ahmad Jamal Trios and the Modern Jazz Quartet), and the popularity of the piano/guitar/bass trio faded. We think it deserves a revival, through traditional forms and new ones.
Bill Cunliffe (formerly with Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, Benny Golson), Larry Koonse (Billy Childs, Natalie Cole, Seth McFarlane) and Darek Oles (Brad Meldau, Pat Metheny and Chris Potter) come from the tradition, yet are forward looking and creative. Sezin Ahmet will be making a special appearance on bass for this night. We hope that the WAA showcase will feature our music and make it available to quality venues throughout the West; a chance for us to freely express who we are as musicians in a style both historical and innovative.
