A Weekend in Manchester

Home to renowned art galleries, world-famous football and a fantastic music scene – there’s so much to love about Manchester. Once the world’s manufacturing powerhouse, its former industrial buildings now bounce with energy. From the creative to the culinary a wealth of treasures are waiting to be discovered. This weekend break provides ample free time to visit this vibrant city at your leisure and explore its famous and lesser-known attractions.
INCLUSIONS:
3 nights’ bed & breakfast
Optional coach travel to RHS Bridgewater
GARDENS: Immerse yourself in nature's beauty as you explore the city's serene green spaces, from expansive parks to hidden gardens. Castlefield is a Victorian-era steel viaduct transformed into a green ‘Sky Garden’ in the heart of Manchester. The elevated setting above the historic cobbled streets has been designed with a subtle nod to the industrial architecture of the viaduct. Perhaps make a visit to RHS Bridgewater, located on the outskirts of the city. We will provide a complimentary transfer to the gardens (entrance not included) on Sunday 24th August. Opened in 2021, this beautiful 156 acre garden makes for a superb horticultural experience as we explore its wonders including the maze-like Worsley Welcome Garden, the Paradise Garden, the Chinese inspired four season themed Streamside Garden, the Kitchen Garden and the Weston Walled Garden to name but a few. There are refreshments venues within Bridgewater where you can rest and relax with coffee and cake or something a little more substantial.
SHOPPING: It’s unsurprising that visitors travel from all over the world to shop in Manchester. With a number of extensive shopping centres such as Manchester Arndale and the Trafford Centre, as well as high street destinations including Exchange Square and Market street offering an unrivalled selection of international brands and the best of British Department stores. For that extra special something visit the boutique districts around King Street, Spinningfields and New Cathedral Street or, if one-off independents and bespoke designs are more to your liking, take a visit to The Northern Quarter, Manchester’s alternative and creative heart.
MUESEUMS AND GALLERIES: Embark on a cultural odyssey and explore a world of artistic wonders and historical treasures, as iconic institutions and hidden gems beckon. Explore 250 years of innovations and ideas that started life in Manchester at The Science and Industry Museum. Manchester Museum, within the university, is at the heart of the city’s cultural scene and home to an incredible range of collections covering everything from archaeology to zoology and natural history to human cultures. Manchester Art Gallery is free to visit and houses over 46,000 objects of fine art, decorative art and costume. The Imperial War Museum North delivers an award-winning immersive experience where you can walk through a timeline of history from the First World War to the present day.
FOOTBALL: With eight professional football teams in Greater Manchester and with the sport deeply embedded in its history, for many, a visit to Manchester would not be complete without taking time to appreciate the beautiful game. Visit Old Trafford and embark on a captivating journey as you step foot in the heart and soul of one of football’s most iconic clubs. Or perhaps visit the National Football Museum and experience football in all its glory, discovering its profound history with interesting facts, captivating stories, fascinating displays and exhibitions.
GASTRONOMY: From fine dining and afternoon tea to pop-up markets and delicious street-food, Manchester is packed with options to suit any palate and mood, offering every cuisine you can imagine. Showcasing all its original Edwardian beauty with a modern twist, The Corn Exchange is home to a mouth-watering mix of restaurants from around the world including Germany, Greece, India, Italy and the Far-East alongside firm British favourites.
