A Night with a Mad King 👑This one is not for the faint-hearted, and we mean that in the best possible way.
The evening opens with Sally Beamish's The King's Alchemist , inspired by the true story of John Damian, an eccentric alchemist at the Scottish court who genuinely believed he could fly to France from the top of a castle. It ended exactly as you'd expect.
Then comes the main event: Peter Maxwell Davies' Eight Songs for a Mad King , one of the most extraordinary pieces of music theatre ever written. Based on the real words of King George III during his mental breakdown, it follows a king alone on stage, obsessively trying to teach his caged birds to sing. The vocal part spans more than five octaves, shifting from whispers to shrieks to moments of eerie calm. The musicians don't just play, they become part of the drama. It is wild, it is intense, and it will stay with you.
This concert is performed without an intermission. Come ready.
