An in conversation & full-colour account of Lindsay Reade and Tony Wilson’s working life,
relationship & Factory Records
About this Event

A Continual Farewell tells the story of the relationship between Factory Records’ Tony Wilson and his first wife, Lindsay Reade, through their letters, Factory Records memorabilia and numerous family photos and snapshots. Many are typed on Factory notepaper, or are scrawled on pages from various studios and hotels.

They begin in the punk year of 1976 from love at first sight to marriage, from a music show entitled So It Goes to the formation of Factory and the Hacienda, across domestic infidelities, separation, stalled reconciliations and a brutal sacking.

After all that, when the reader would doubt any recovery was possible, the letters describe a renewed but now illicit love affair of former marriage partners. And beyond that, to a lasting friendship.

For this special and intimate in conversation, Lindsay will be hosted by Louder Luminary Zoë Howe - what a treat we have in store for sure!

We have two ticket options available: * Event Only and *Event with Discounted Book Combo deal - books will be available for collection at the Festival.

Our event will be followed by a dedicated signing event with Lindsay and Zoë. RRP books will also be available for purchase on the day.

Lindsay Reade is well-travelled, spiritually inclined, interested in philosophies, and has an honours degree in psychology. She trained as a nurse and a teacher. She was also one of the founders of Factory Records along with her husband, Tony Wilson. She was responsible for the first single by Orchestral Manoevres in the Dark, and managed Manchester soul/funk band, 52nd Street for many years, also running Factory’s overseas licensing department. After her divorce from Tony, she went on to co-manage The Stone Roses, getting them their first record deal.

Having witnessed the troubled life of Ian Curtis at first hand, Lindsay co-wrote Torn Apart, alongside Mick Middles. Two years after Tony Wilson’s death she published Mr Manchester and the Factory Girl, a memoir of their time together.

She considers her latest book, A Continual Farewell, to be a final archiving of her Factory years and her relationship with Tony Wilson.

Zoë Howe is a writer, editor, broadcaster and artist whose books span the worlds of music, culture and the occult. Part of the core team behind the award-winning documentary Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché, Zoë’s 2009 debut Typical Girls? The Story of the Slits, was, according to Dr Audrey Golden, the first full-scale biography of a female group; more recently, Zoë was the editor of Lindsay Reade’s A Continual Farewell and Pauline Murray’s hit memoir Life’s A Gamble. Her most recent publications include Witchful Thinking: The Wise Woman’s Handbook for Creating A Charmed Life (Llewellyn Worldwide) and her previous music books have covered artists including The Jesus & Mary Chain, Poly Styrene, Stevie Nicks, The Jam, Wilko Johnson and Lee Brilleaux. A great believer in the healing magic of words, music and humour, Zoë is a former ‘rock ‘n’ roll agony aunt’ for the Blues Magazine and mental health charity CALM. Her debut novel Shine On, Marquee Moon was shortlisted for the Virginia Prize and she is a regular host on Soho Radio with her Rock ’n’ Roll Witch show. Zoë is proud to be the festival’s ‘Louder Luminary’.
