About Kirtan
Kirtan has roots that can be traced back to India around the sixth century and adds distinct musical elements to mantra chanting in an easy-to-follow, call-and-response type structure. Its free-flowing nature, repetitive patterns and minimalism can compare to Northern Soul and House Music of the heydays of clubbing. The difference is: You join in. And no matter what the individual musical talent is, the joint sounds and vibrations create a space of connection and unity and some may even experience a sense of euphoria. “Faith doesn’t need to enter into it, we all thirst to feel part of something bigger” says Nikki Slade, “Chanting gives a space to find connection without a specific religion.” Other than Nikki Slade, Kirtan has been popularised in the West by Grammy-nominated singer Jai Uttal and again recently in London by investment banker turned yoga teacher and kirtan singer Manizeh Rimer at Love Supreme Projects in Notting Hill.
