5 Day Theater-Butoh Workshop and Solo Creation by 4RUDE//Nerve-Forest-Deep Sea//
In this 4RUDE workshop, we will introduce the Hijikata style of Butoh-Fu and the Suzuki Method of Actor Training, mainly focusing on solo Butoh creation.
After experiencing some of the important basic training, we will travel through nerves, forests, and the deep sea in a Butoh-fu.
“Butoh-fu is a notation of Butoh dance. Butoh-fu seems like poetry, but is Physical Language. It is a kind of symbol for the choreographer and dancer to share images and movements. A word is not only a tool for recording, but is used as a kind of medium to expand a physical image with imagination.”
In this journey, we will discover our own Butoh, which is linked to personal memories and experiences.
A public showing will take place on the final day of the workshop.
This workshop is open to everyone: not only to professional performers such as actors and dancers but also to those who've never been on stage before.
We also welcome all artists who are interested in our BUTOH.

4RUDE is looking for an ideal form of expression and invents a spectacle without words. From elements of the theater and the butoh arise individual pieces of bodily movements that spring from innermost experiences. They have been developing this way of working and their vision for years, looking for a way into the deep, creating a unique stage language. The home base of the company is Berlin.
Hikaru Inagawa (JP/DE) is a choreographer, actor, Butoh artist, and director, with a background in philosophical studies. He studied the traditional Japanese art of acting based on the Suzuki method with Satoshi Miyagi, and Butoh under Yukio Waguri. With the Ku Na'uka Theater Company, he performed in Japan and worldwide between 1998 and 2004. In 2005 he co-founded the Theater-Butoh Company 4RUDE with Maco. Hikaru has lived in Berlin since 2013, where he continues his performance, and practice and teaches his technique at regular training.
Maco (JP/DE) is a choreographer, Butoh artist, and actress. She began her artistic career in the 1980s. She received Butoh lessons from Kazuo Ohno and Yukio Wagri. From 1999 to 2006, she was a member of the Ku Na'uka Theatre Company and played main roles. In 2005 she co-founded the Theater-Butoh Company 4RUDE together with Hikaru Inagawa. Maco has choreographed and appeared in all 4RUDE’s performances. Alongside this, she continues her solo practice and collaborations with various artists across different disciplines.
