🇨🇺 Learn the Abakua and Chango with Maestro's Jesús La Rosa Pérez.
Abakuá is an Afro-Cuban male secret society with roots in the Efik and Ekpe traditions of southeastern Nigeria and southwestern Cameroon. It was brought to Cuba in the 19th century through enslaved Africans, especially in Havana and Matanzas, where it continues to be active today. The Abakuá society preserves both religious and cultural traditions that center around fraternity, loyalty, and ancestral respect. Abakuá ceremonies and rituals include symbolic storytelling, rhythmic drumming, and dance, each with deep spiritual meaning.
The Abakuá dance is characterized by powerful, grounded movements and intricate footwork that reflect both the strength and solidarity of its members. The dance is performed to the beat of sacred drums, known as bonkó enchemiyá, which are played in complex polyrhythms exclusive to Abakuá ceremonies. The music and dance have contributed to Cuba’s cultural identity, influencing Cuban Rumba, especially the style known as Columbia.
For dancers, studying Abakuá offers a deeper understanding of Cuban rhythm, history, and movement, with powerful body control and cultural insight that benefit styles like Rumba, salsa, and Casino. It’s not just a dance but a journey into Cuba’s Afro-Cuban spiritual heritage, honoring resilience, unity, and ancestral roots.
ChangĂł is a powerful and revered Orisha in the Yoruba religion and Afro-Cuban SanterĂa, embodying fire, thunder, lightning, and masculine strength. Known as a warrior, king, and lover, ChangĂł is associated with courage, passion, and sensuality. He is often portrayed as a charismatic figure with an intense energy, wielding a double-headed ax and dressed in his characteristic colors of red and white.
For dancers, learning Changó’s movements can enhance power, rhythm, and expressiveness on the dance floor, adding a level of depth and confidence that benefits not only Orisha dance but also salsa and Casino dancers.
The training is soolo training. No partner needed. Highly recommended for all improver and advanced level salsa, casino, afro-cuban dancers.
