About this Event

What is 36 Xposures?

36 Xposures celebrates the art of photography by showcasing diverse styles and perspectives of professional photographers while sparking vital conversations about the craft. Year-long programming includes an innovative photography challenge and film,
a photo exhibit, and learning components designed to inspire and invite photography enthusiasts from everywhere into the minds of creative professionals.

The 36 Xposures Challenge

Each year, eight photographers from varying disciplines (ie: red carpet, nature, sport, etc) compete under identical conditions: one model, one location, natural light only, and 30 minutes to shoot just 36 exposures. Competitors bring their camera of choice - for digital shooters, photo displays must be turned off, no peeking!

Behind the Lens

The competition doesn’t end with the click of the shutter. The photographers then participate in a tense editing and photo selection process when they finally get to review the 36 exposures taken during the challenge, and choose the photo that will be displayed as their final print at a Reveal Event.

Finally, Master Photographer and Printer Fabrice Strippoli offers his knowledge and insights on the intricate and nuanced practice of photo printing, helping the viewer ‘see’ the image in ways that might not have been considered.

The Reveal Event

The 36 Xposures Reveal Event marks the finale of the challenge where attendees get
to view the unveiling of the final photographs from each competitor. A jury of industry experts select the “Top Photograph” while the crowd selects the “People’s Choice” winner. The event has sold out for the past two years and features a signature cocktail named “The Cure-All” to help raise awareness for Rett Syndrome Research and a raffle to raise funds for the cause that is close to our hearts. https://www.rett.ca/hope-fund/

The Film

The journey in its entirety is captured and developed into an full feature documentary film. Not only do the constraints of the challenge create great entertainment, they ultimately illuminate the craft of photography and the way each photographer sees and interprets the world through their lens. As viewers watch each photographer grapple with their tools and the changing natural light while relying on their expertise and unique style, there are jump cuts to ‘Xplain Moments’ where viewers can get a deeper understanding of the technique and decisions each photographer is making. It is a rare and novel opportunity to view and appreciate what the photographer is seeing and thinking about when they take their shots.

A Vision for the Future

With positive feedback from the community and industry, Michelle and Shawna have a bold vision for what’s next and are eager to expand this initiative to continue to elevate the craft of photography. “We have so many ideas for the future”, says Shawna, “We are committed to the development of this project and are motivated to reach an even wider audience of photography enthusiasts from all walks.”
