About this Event
The Philadelphia Cricket Club is well known for its 36-hole golf facility just outside of Philadelphia in Flourtown, which includes a classic course designed by A.W. Tillinghast and a modern course designed by Hurdzan and Fry.
Lesser known is the St. Martins course, located at the Club's original campus in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. The course was originally built as 9 holes in 1895 and expanded to 18 holes in 1898. Soon after, the course hosted two U.S. Opens, in 1907 and 1910. The course was reduced to 9 holes in 1925 and has been preserved by The Philadelphia Cricket Club, where it provides a reminder of the Club’s significant contribution to the history of golf.
St. Martins today includes elements from nearly every version of the course, including the first hole playing across Hartwell Lane in 1895, parts of Willie Tucker’s 1898 routing, hazards and length added for the 1907 U.S. Open, the renovation of green sites and bunkering by Donald Ross in 1914, and three new holes added in 1963. The course was fully restored in 2013 with new grass, irrigation, and rebuilt bunkers, giving members and guests the course's terrific present conditions. Beyond the nostalgic golfing experience, the course preserves a green space for members and the wider Chestnut Hill community, while providing a public walking path that connects with the trails of Fairmount Park surrounding the Wissahickon Creek.
Join the 1854 Foundation as speaker Chris Kallmeyer traces the evolution of the course from its origin in 1895 to the gem it is today.
