This New Year's Eve, join Louise as we come together in community to practice 108 Sun Salutations to celebrate the last day of the year. With this powerful tapastic practice, burn through anything that no longer serves and set intentions for all that’s to come. Joining forces with Neil Raitt, who will match the rhythm and meditative power of the practice with a live DJ set, this will be an event not to miss!
A Surya Namaskar (sun salutation) is a sequence of 12 powerful yoga asanas (poses) strung together to create consistent movement. The practice is steeped in ancient tradition and used by communities worldwide to celebrate seasonal changes and mark auspicious events. Namaskar means “to bow to” or “to adore”, in this case, the sun. When we rise to Mountain Pose (Tadasana), we honour the sun, the heavens, and the universe. When we bow down to a forward fold (Uttanasana), we honour the earth, our stability, our home.
Completing 108 sun salutations is a Tapasic practice in that it requires a burning desire and strong willpower. It brings us into a state of focused, moving meditation. This inner heat and focused meditation help us peel away unnecessary layers of thought, emotions, or physical baggage, allowing our full potential to emerge.
In our Sun Salutations, the breath guides you, linking one pose to the next. With focus on breath, we can use our exhale to release what no longer serves us and inhale new ways of being that nurture us. We also join together in the vibrational sound of the breath, the mantra that unites us all as we travel together on this journey.
This practice is closely linked with the Hindu belief that 108 is a sacred number: there are 108 Upanishads (Hindu spiritual texts), 108 names for Hindu deities, 108 sacred points on the body (marma points) in Ayurveda, 108 sacred sites (pithas) in India, 108 beads on a mala (a garland of Hindu prayer beads), yoga pranayama is completed in cycles of 108, the distance between the Sun and the Earth is roughly 108 times the Sun’s diameter, and the distance between the Moon and Earth is roughly 108 times the Moon’s diameter.
Whether you finish 18, 80, or 108, it is the intent that counts. Louise will give lots of options and variety, and the time and space to take breaks and rest.
We will start by journaling and reflecting on the past year and setting intentions for the one to come before arriving at the top of our mats to begin this very special practice. To close, we will end with some slower restorative poses and some time to reflect and connect on our journey together.
Louise started her yoga journey in London spending years practicing Rocket, giving her the wings to fly and a passion for inversions, breath, bandhas and pranayama as well as a desire to delve deeper, before moving to Los Angeles in 2017. Her training at Liberation Yoga in LA filled her heart and practice with love, courage and deep spiritual roots. She loves to share this practice with others, putting together creative and inspiring sequences always coming from an inclusive place. Her classes include spirituality, meditation and pranayama, encouraging people to come back to themselves one breath at a time. Since moving back to London she has continued her learning with trainings in Hatha, Vinyasa, Mandala, Rocket & Yin yoga. She loves to be a constant student, seeking wonder and knowledge through all of her teachings, finding inspiration from her students and teachers alike. She teaches across London and loves to share this practice as part of a community. With a focus on creating joy in movement and cultivating space in body and mind. She gives thanks to her teachers, past and present, and is passionate about sharing this transformational practice.
