101 Dalmatians at The Revival House Perth
When London songwriter Roger Radcliffe (Jeff Daniels) and fashion designer Anita Campbell-Scott (Joely Richardson) meet in the park through their dalmatians Pongo and Perdita, it's love at first sight—for both humans and dogs. After a whirlwind romance and wedding, their happiness is complete when Perdita gives birth to fifteen adorable puppies. But their joy attracts the attention of Anita's villainous boss, the fur-obsessed Cruella De Vil (Glenn Close), who becomes fixated on turning the spotted puppies into a spotted coat. When the couple refuses to sell, Cruella hires bungling thieves Jasper and Horace (Hugh Laurie and Mark Williams) to steal the entire litter. Escaping London to a remote mansion, the puppies discover they're not alone—Cruella has kidnapped 84 other dalmatian puppies for her diabolical fashion scheme. Now it's up to Pongo, Perdita, and an army of London's animals to stage a daring rescue before Cruella's deadline arrives.
Director Stephen Herek brings Dodie Smith's beloved novel to live-action life in this 1996 family adventure that balances slapstick comedy with genuine heart. Glenn Close commands every frame as Cruella, creating one of cinema's most memorable villains with her scenery-chewing performance, outrageous costumes, and sports-car-driving madness. The film's greatest technical achievement is wrangling the hundreds of real dalmatians required—no CGI dogs here, just patient animal training creating genuinely charming moments. Laurie and Williams provide excellent comic relief as the hapless henchmen, enduring escalating slapstick punishment. Anthony Powell's costume design for Cruella is spectacular, each outfit more extravagant than the last. Michael Kamen's playful score captures both the adventure's excitement and the cozy domesticity of the Radcliffe household. It's a delightful adaptation that honors the animated classic while forging its own identity.
