Mike Tony's latest offering, "Counting Sheep" is a feverish first hand account of overcoming the pitfalls of self sabotage and a toxic inner monologue--those familiar demons speaking in your own voice that tell you not to even try. An insidious sense of dread is fleshed out with percussive skulking and an uneasy organ invoking the fire and brimstone of an untethered psyche. The tension builds until it bursts with a dramatic vocal release at the song's chorus, something Mike Tony is always good for. Fuzzed out guitars gnash against a troubling saxophone, sending you even deeper down the spiral until you're gasping for air at his final hook. "Counting Sheep" stops on a dime at 3:31, abruptly vanishing and leaving the listener in a cold sweat with their own thoughts.
