The Lake District is England's largest and by far the UK's most popular national park. In 2017 the Lake District was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, joining the likes of the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China and the Grand Canyon on the illustrious list. Winter in the Lake District is a truly magical time! With snow-peaked mountains and the peaceful serenity of the lakes, the landscape takes on spectacular winter beauty. Pull on your boots and step outdoors with us on this new exciting weekend trip to the heart of the Lakes!
On Saturday, we'll climb the mighty Skiddaw in the Northern Lake District. At 931 metres, it's England's fourth highest peak and one of the most popular fells in the Lakes, with amazing panoramic views over Derwent Water and its picturesque islands, Bassenthwaite Lake and Keswick. From Dodd Wood, we'll start our gradual ascent via the impressive ridge, passing the summits of Ullock Pike (690m), Long Side (734m) and Carl Side (746m). The descent is via the Jenkin Hill Path. This broad and straightforward trail was established as a pony route for Victorian tourists looking to get into the hills. After the hike, we'll drive to our hotel, where we'll have dinner and rest.
Sunday will be much more relaxing, as we'll head to the snake-shaped Ullswater – the second largest lake in the Lake District and certainly one of the most beautiful. Our trail will take in the impressive 20-metre Aira Force waterfall, the summit of Gowbarrow Fell (481m), and great views of the surrounding mountains and Ullswater. The hike will finish in Glenridding village. From there, we'll take a scenic drive via Kirkstone Pass to the small town of Bowness-in-Windermere, on the shores of Windermere (the largest lake in England). You'll have free time for a hearty warm lunch and to explore souvenir shops, and perhaps even visit The World of Beatrix Potter museum. One of the most famous children's authors of all time lived, holidayed and found her inspiration here, in the Lake District. This magical indoor attraction brings to life Beatrix Potter's tales, the most famous of all being The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
