(NL) Met een opzettelijke typefout in de titel knipoogt de gegeerde Poolse beeldenstormer Łukasz Twarkowski naar imitatiemerken als Adibas en Dolce Banana. Na het spectaculaire QUANTA, vorig seizoen te zien in de Rode zaal, schudt hij opnieuw het internationale theaterlandschap door elkaar. ROHTKO is een monumentaal spektakel, geïnspireerd door één van de grootste schandalen uit de kunstwereld. Dat kwam uit toen een nietsvermoedend echtpaar voor meer dan acht miljoen dollar een vervalst schilderij van Mark Rothko kocht, en bleek dat het vermaarde New Yorkse Knoedler al jaren handelde in vervalsingen van Rothko, Jackson Pollock en Robert Motherwell.
In een grootschalig schouwspel vol pompende beats, videoprojecties, dynamische decorwissels en door elkaar lopende verhaallijnen, vraagt Twarkowski zich af of fake ook echt kan zijn. Of een vervalsing ook echte gevoelens kan opwekken. Volgens de Chinese filosofie van ‘shanzai’ alvast wel. Daarin is een origineel product niet vaststaand, maar een startpunt voor creatieve interpretatie. Eén ding is zeker: wat geldt voor de schilderijen van Rothko, geldt ook voor het zogenaamde ‘Netflixtheater’ van Twarkowski. Eens je het gezien hebt, vergeet je het nooit. Nep of niet.
